Frequently Asked Questions from Potential Interns

Does Banyan Tree Counseling accept interns?
Yes. We host one master’s-level intern per school year, typically running from Fall through Spring, with the possibility of extending into Summer depending on university requirements.

Do you accept bachelor’s-level interns or site experiences?
No. We are only able to accommodate master’s-level interns.

Can I complete just one semester at Banyan?
No. For continuity of care, interns must commit to at least one full school year.

What does an internship at Banyan look like?
Our interns function as independent therapists, managing their own caseloads, intakes, scheduling, treatment planning, and documentation. Interns should complete their first practicum in a setting with more direct support before joining Banyan for their final two semesters.

What kinds of clients will interns see?
Interns will work with a diverse range of ages, demographics, and presenting concerns. Those who are interested may also see couples and families.

When do interviews take place?
Interviews are held each February for the following school year, with decisions made by March 1st. This timeline allows enough time for both university and Banyan onboarding before the internship start date.

What is the application deadline?
Prospective interns must contact Clinical Director Jamie Cullen ([email protected]) by January of the year the internship begins. Example: For a Fall 2026 placement, you must reach out no later than January 2026.

Do you accept last-minute placements?
No. Due to the independence expected of interns and our in-depth onboarding process, we cannot accommodate last-minute requests.

What if I have other questions?

​The heart of Banyan Tree Counseling is its fantastic staff. And we don't just enjoy working together-- we have developed lifelong friendships! We are not your average counseling practice. We work hard, but make self-care and FUN a priority, too! An integral part of BTC mission and values is to give back to our community, locally as well as globally. In 2022 we were able to take our first BTC staff team-building retreat to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. One of the most memorable parts of the trip was bringing all the mental-health-related donations we had collected to the Little Yellow Schoolhouse -- the only school on the island to provide education and support for children with disabilities. We had a wonderful time and made memories for the books!
